Marie Yoshimizu (Instagram: @mixwithmarie)Happy Dry January! Is cutting alcohol your New Year’s resolution? Non-alcoholic drinks are not only for underage people, expecting mothers, or designated drivers. Back when I was in college in Kansas, I used to go out with friends to some local bars and breweries often, but I have noticed that many Gen Z-ers prefer not to drink or do not drink as much. Non-alcoholic drinks are becoming popular among those Gen Z-ers too.

I live in the Greater Seattle area, where many bars and restaurants offer interesting non-alcoholic drinks, but when I visited my in-laws in Kansas for the holidays, I noticed that there are still some bars and restaurants out there that only have water, soda, and juice for non-alcoholic options.

I believe keeping up with the new trend and having craft non-alcoholic drinks on the menu would attract Gen Z-ers and keep the bars and restaurants busy. You also do not have to worry about getting hungover the next day, so you can go out on weekdays and socialize. Although they are a great alternative to cocktails, there is one downside. Since there is no alcohol in them, people do not feel the “buzz,” and they do not order as many. There are many ways to craft make non-alcoholic drinks, for example, replacing alcoholic spirits with zero-proof spirits, using shrubs, fermented ingredients like kombucha, Hydrosol, brewed ingredients like tea and coffee, and many more. Here are some of the craft non-alcoholic drinks that I made for Dry January. Stay dry, and drink responsibly! Cheers!.”- Marie Yoshimizu / Mixologist, Seattle, WA
